United Welsh is working in partnership with Caerphilly Council and Morganstone Ltd to build 48 new energy efficient homes, which will include homes for social rent and homes for sale.
The construction phase is now underway after Morganstone Ltd, the contractors for the new development, broke ground on the site in October.
The Penallta Colliery development will see the creation of 6 one-bedroom apartments, 15 two-bedroom houses and 16 three-bedroom houses. There will also be 10 three-bedroom homes available to buy through an affordable shared ownership scheme.
All the homes will have increased energy efficiency and will embrace low carbon technology.
Lynn Morgan, Director of Development for United Welsh said:
“Creating high quality, affordable homes that meet the needs of people in our communities continues to be a key priority for United Welsh.
“The scheme is a positive step towards meeting the demand for more affordable homes in Caerphilly borough and we are delighted that the build is underway.”
The development, which has benefited from Welsh Government Social Housing Grant funding, is due to complete in 2022.
It will also create local job opportunities, with roles available on site for United Welsh tenants to learn new skills for a career in construction or to return to work.
Cllr Lisa Phipps, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Property, added:
“Delivering high quality affordable homes is a key priority for the Council and we’re delighted to work in partnership with United Welsh to bring new homes to the former Penallta Colliery site. As well as helping to meet the local demand for housing, the development will also bring a wealth of wider benefits for the local community.”
United Welsh provides over 6,000 homes across 11 local authorities in South Wales and has created more than 1,000 homes in the past five years. The Penallta Colliery development is contributing towards United Welsh’s plans to build 1,300 affordable homes in the next five years.
