Children in Bettws, Newport have enjoyed activity packs to keep them entertained in the days of lockdown thanks to support from the Working Families team and partnership organisations.

In recent weeks, organisations which form the Early Learning Community programme (ELC) have made a huge difference to families living through lockdown, with schools, Newport Council, community groups and housing associations providing support.

The Biscuit Club in Bettws is part of the ELC, and after close partnership working with the group this year, the Working Families team delivered activity packs to children at the scheme so that arts and crafts could be enjoyed at home.

Natalie Green, Working Families Team Leader said: “The schools and organisations working as part of the ELC have done a fantastic job of supporting families at what has been a very difficult time.

“We are pleased we could offer support. The ELC is an excellent example of what can be achieved when people come together.”

The ELC was formed by local school teachers and is now made up of several organisations, including:

  • Newport City Council
  • POBL
  • GAVO
  • Parent Network
  • Flying Start
  • Newport Foodbank

Working Families is delivered by United Welsh, Tai Calon, Monmouthshire Housing, Newport City Homes, Charter Housing and Linc Cymru with funding from Big Lottery Fund Wales.

The Working Families team was setup to support working families in Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly and Monmouthshire to improve their quality of life.

The team creates and supports community initiatives to support working families who may be experiencing issues with having enough money to support the family and pay bills; debt; childcare; secure employment; training and more.
