Llys Nant Y Mynydd, United Welsh’s Extra Care scheme in Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent, has officially been recognised as a Dementia Friendly Community.

On Thursday September 26th, we were delighted to welcome Alun Davies, AM for Blaenau Gwent, who presented Llys Nant Y Mynydd with a Dementia Friendly Community Award.

To receive the award from the Alzheimer’s Society, Llys Nant Y Mynydd had to show what has been done to raise awareness and promote understanding of dementia within the scheme, including demonstrating how people living with dementia are understood, respected and supported.

Heather Payne, Scheme Manager for Llys Nant Y Mynydd said: “We are really proud to have been recognised for the steps we have taken for our tenants who live with dementia, as well as families affected by dementia in the local community, to ensure they have a positive experience within Llys Nant Y Mynydd.”

Llys Nant Y Mynydd also recently became a new venue for the Blaenau Gwent Gwenu Café, so the award was presented in the company of tenants and residents doing crafts at the first café at the scheme.

The café is a community group that supports anyone whose life has been impacted by dementia. It will be held the fourth Thursday of every month at the scheme and anyone of any age is welcome to attend.

Heather added: “Thank you to all our friends and partners who helped us to gain this award.”
Llys Nant y Mynydd is a high quality Extra Care Housing Scheme located in the small community of Nantyglo.

The scheme, which has 44 apartments for older people, also has excellent communal facilities including a restaurant, two lounges, a gym, laundry facilities, a coffee shop, hairdressers and an IT suite.
